Physical Activity Assessment and Energy Expenditure Estimates using the IDEEA Activity Monitor

Below is a snapshot of the ActViewTM program used for the measurement of physical activity and energy expenditure estimates. ActView is a very powerful windows-based program that can analyze and visualize the type, duration, frequency, and intensity of physical activity, exercises, and their energy expenditure estimates. The curves for EE (energy expenditure), Power, Speed and Raw Data are dynamic. You can play any activity part by point and drag, or select any period of interest to assess physical activity or behavior patterns. You can also select the speed of play and unit (e.g., KJ, km/hr) of your choice, similar to playing videotape. The character on the left will have a close match to the person, and start to animate the real life postures and physical activity with very high accuracy.

Assessment of Physical Activity and Behavior types by the Behavior Monitoring Function of IDEEA Behavior Monitor

This screen-grab from ActViewTM summarizes the percent of each posture and physical activity for a given period. The duration, counts (such as steps made), and speed of locomotion of physical activity types are presented in the table to the right. All measures of physical activity, posture, and behavior pattern are dynamically and instantaneously updated when you change the observation time, either by selecting from the list at the top-left or simply by sliding the left/right ends (green color) on the yellow bar.

Measurement of Distance Traveled, Speed of Locomotion, and Body Motion Analysis of a Person, Anywhere, Anytime

IDEEA can analyze locomotion in free-living conditions with high accuracy, down to every steps made. The up-left graph shows the instantaneous speed of a person while she was walking (first 3 segments) and running (last 3 segments) on a track, at 100 meters each segment. The up-right curve shows the cumulative distance traveled (locomotion). You can see the highly accurate results measured by the IDEEA physical activity monitor. Note that 100 m equals 0.062 mile, thus total distance = .062 x 6 = 0.372 mile. Also note that the flat segments represent resting periods between activities. The speed distribution (bottom left) was selected for walk analysis, which has 3 distinctive distributions.

Quantifying Energy Expenditure Components of Various Physical Activity Types for Persons with Different Lifestyle and Behavior Patterns

For each type of Physical Activity or posture, the energy expenditure estimate is also provided, together with the duration, frequency (count) etc.. There is a subtotal for each body posture, limb or body motion, and each type of physical activity or exercise. Note you can select any period of interest of a test, which can last as long as 7 days. As soon as the period selection is complete, all data will be updated immediately. You can scroll the bars to view more types of activity, or extend any column of the table on the bottom-right of the screen-grab below for better view.

Power and Mechanical Work of Physical Activity and Exercise by the Functional Assessment Tools of IDEEA System

Designed for quantifying physical activity and body motion analysis, IDEEA System can compute the power (top left of screen-grab below), mechanical work (top right), and distributions of power output for different activity types. You can select different measurement units such as watt or Kcal/minute, KJ or calories as you wish. You can also print this and other graphs and tables simply by pressing the print button on the top right. Important events over different time periods that you have reviewed are remembered by ActView program so that you can go back to them quickly. This physical activity monitor is ideal for monitoring fitness training and a great tool for sports trainers.

Measurement of Energy Expenditure Rate and Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) Assessment by IDEEA Activity Monitor

Energy expenditure assessment is very important for a number of researches. The ideal way for assessing energy expenditure would be minute-by-minute assessment of energy expenditure in free-living, on 24-hr basis. This is what IDEEA can do. The top-left graph provides the dynamic energy expenditure estimates of a person while she was walking and running in a track field. Furthermore, the total energy expenditure (TEE) is plotted cumulatively on the top-right graph. This enables the assessment of energy expenditure and TEE for any given activity type or time period.
