Minimizing Risks While Increasing Physical Activity
|
Chronic inactivity, or so called sedentary lifestyle has been proven to increases
the risk for a number of diseases, such as obesity, heart attack, blood vessel disease,
stroke, diabetes, cancer, fracture, and depression.
In contrast, regular exercise can reduce the risks for these diseases and leads to an overall sense of well-being.
|
|
However, strictly formal, aggressive, uninterrupted workout program is not only unnecessary in
reducing health risks but may also increase cardiovascular or other risks. Moderate levels of physical
activity in fact confer significant health benefits. Therefore the key point here is how to define
"moderate level" for each individual who has various physical conditions to improve their health and
at the same time reduce the chance of injury.
|
|
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) define physical activity as "bodily movement produced
by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure" and produces healthy benefits. Exercise,
a type of physical activity, is defined as "a planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement
done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness."

|
So “what exercise program is right for me?” To answer this question, medical professionals need an
intelligent physical activity monitor that can provide quantitive measurement with high accuracy
under free-living condition. IDEEA® as a highly sophisticated yet portable device, combined with
user-friendly data analysis and presentation software tool, fits the need perfectly. By monitoring the type,
amount, and intensity of physical activities, professionals can use IDEEA® to improve risk managment
effectively.
|
|
IDEEA® functions focusing on monitoring energy expenditure and posture detection
during everyday physical activities (sleeping, sitting, standing, walking, running, going
upstairs/downstairs, etc.). In the study of energy expenditure estimation for physical activities
done by New York Obesity Research Center in Columbia University using IDEEA®, it has been proven to
be able to “provide a suitable method for estimating the energy expenditure of physical activity.
It provides both instantaneous and cumulative estimates of energy expenditure over a given period.”
|
| Dr. Kevin Lester, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon specializing
in Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement surgery, has been using IDEEA® for clinical gait analysis in order to
evaluate the effect of treatment and manage the risk of injury. He believes this device is going to change the practice of
orthopaedic surgeons by providing objective and quantitative measurment of patients' functional capacity and
enthusiastically recommended this device to his peers.
|
|
IDEEA is what researchers have been waiting for decades! It is the most
powerful and accurate device ever of its kind. The data analysis and
result presentation is astounding.
|
|
|
The birth of IDEEA creates a new era for studies in physical activity,
behavior and fitness. Truly remarkable!
